About Riverside: Since the beginning of human history in North America, people have been drawn to Southern California by the mild climate and abundant resources. The first residents of the Riverside area were Native Americans. Some of their beautiful baskets and other artifacts are preserved in the Municipal Museum, and members of the Cahuilla and Serrano tribes still live in the county. Spanish colonists followed soon after explorer Juan Batista De Anza came through Riverside in 1774. De Anza reported finding water and good land for a rancho along the Santa Ana River. Spanish influences are still visible in Riverside today in much of the architecture, the cuisine, and in the rich cultural life of the Hispanic community. A period of rapid Anglo colonization in the 1880s started under the leadership of John W. North, a New York idealist and abolitionist. North laid out plans for the central part of the City of Riverside, and began enticing people from the eastern states to come to sunny California. Another early developer, Indiana banker Samuel Evans, expanded the community. Click Here to View Featured Riverside Ca. Investors from England and Canada transplanted traditions and activities adopted by prosperous citizens: the first golf course and polo field in Southern California were built in Riverside. The first orange trees were planted in 1871, but the citrus industry in Riverside began two years later when Eliza Tibbets received two Brazilian navel orange trees sent to her by a friend at the Department of Agriculture in Washington. The trees thrived in the Southern California climate and the navel orange industry grew rapidly. Within a few years, the successful cultivation of the newly discovered navel orange led to a California Gold Rush of a different kind: the establishment of the citrus industry, which is commemorated in the landscapes and exhibits of the California Citrus State Historic Park and the restored packing houses in the Downtown's Marketplace district. By 1882, there were more more than half a million citrus trees in California, almost half of which were in Riverside. The development of refrigerated railroad cars and innovative irrigation systems established Riverside as the wealthiest city per capita by 1895. Welcome to California!California is the most populous state of the United States. Located on the Pacific coast of North America, it is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. The state's four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California is known for its pleasant climate and ethnically diverse population. Inhabited by indigenous people for several millennia, California was first colonized by Spain in 1769, and gained independence becoming part of Mexico in 1821. Following a brief period as the independent California Republic in 1846, California was annexed by the United States that same year, but wasn't actually admitted to the Union until President Millard Fillmore officially made California the thirty-first state on September 9th, 1850. There's plenty to see and do in California. Whether you are the outdoor type or shopaholic, you'll find more than enough to keep you entertained.
